When I picked up my 1978 Aussie Toyota Chinook, the old owner drilled one thing into me—the secret startup ritual for the original 18R carb motor: 1. Turn the key on to get the fuel pump priming 2. Wait until the sound of the pump changes 3. Pump the accelerator pedal three times - no more, no less 4. Crank the starter It is exactly the way, in fact, the ONLY way this car will start. Change the order, or mismatch the sequence and it'll flood or starve and not start.
